Butterfly Survey 2004 Summer 2004

Tottington Woodlanders Member, Joyce Gay, in her work with the
Sussex Branch of the Butterfly Conservation Society, has been undertaking a
systematic survey of Tottington Wood (South). She often passes through our
part of the wood to get to her survey site, and has been informally noting those species observed in our wood. The list of species recorded last year was:-

Brimstone
Comma
Common Blue
Dingy Skipper
Gatekeeper
Green-veined White
Holly Blue
Large Skipper
Marbled White
Meadow Brown
Peacock
Silver-washed Fritillary
Small Skipper
Small Tortoiseshell
Small White

Joyce reliably informs me that the Dingy Skipper is a significant find and that the Marbled White and the Silver-washed Fritillary are also important. She feels sure that other species exist in the wood, and is hoping to pass on
more information to us. If you recognise any butterflies in the wood this season don't forget to make a note and pass it on for inclusion in the on-going survey.

As always, thanks go to Joyce for her contribution to our efforts.
