We regret
to report that earlier this month, as the early
purple orchids were reaching their full development,
some of the woods best orchid specimens were found
broken and scattered across the paths.
As a species-rich 'working wood', Tottington
Wood is more than just a handful of its rarer
plants. It is a resource for all forms of wildlife
and for those who harvest its products and enjoy
its seasons.
Incidents like this are particularly saddening
because the ongoing success of plants such as
orchids are the fruit of much labour given freely
to the wood and to the charity over many years.
A few mindless minutes of wanton destruction can
deprive all of us an opportunity to enjoy some
of the wood's most beautiful features for another
year.
The wood will heal; but can people be persuaded
to show something precious and defenceless a little
respect?
