Coppicing season well underway

Despite the very wet season we have been in the wood most Sundays since the clocks changed.  We are opening up the area to the south of the industrial estate to complete the work we started in that area last season.  We have also cut back the butterfly glade and extended it to the large crab apple tree.  This should make that area even more inviting to butterflies next summer.  In a further effort to encourage butterflies the Countryside Rangers and their volunteers have cut the meadow on the mounds east of the pond.  This will not only help butterflies and other invertebrates, it will also help to suppress rank grasses and tree saplings, which tend to inhibit ground flora.

Anybody who would like to help us with our efforts as a volunteer, please contact Malcolm through the contact us page.

  1. It was fine last Sunday and we had an enjoyable few hours working in the woods, cutting a good size area. Helen

  2. What a shame it has been Sundays which have been worst hit by the weather this season; today is another disastrous example, wet all day and no coppicing. Last week was fine with some keen new members who met us the week before at Seedy Sunday. For the first time ever we ran out of water for hot drinks!

  3. Yes, the season has been fickle with regard to the weather. We will have to go flat out to cut the area of coppice planned for this season and to bundle the product for our market. The more volunteers we can attract in the next four weeks the better. If the water runs dry I can always nip home and get some more. Nobody will go thirsty!
