Following the establishment of the Woodlanders
Richard Lord and Jackie Stone, examined the wood,
and divided it into cants (plots). These subdivisions
of the wood are coppiced in rotation. The coppicing
is planned on an eight-year cycle, with two cants
to be left for the benefit of wildlife, and as
a control for studying the effect of coppicing.
It has been decided not to coppice right up to
the path edges. This provides a green corridor
for wildlife and discourages the formation of
unofficial paths across the wood. When the cant
has grown enough, after four years, the edges are
cut back.
